Description
Mongoose Library under the GPLv2 license is ideal for the non commercial projects, open source projects, private use or evaluation purposes.
Commercial projects can also run under the GPLv2 license by fully releasing the end product’s source code under the GPLv2 license.
To evaluate Mongoose Library along with the non-GPL software (no GPL contamination) you can request an Evaluation license.
However, once your project is commercialized, you need to acquire a Commercial license.
Commercial license removes all GPLv2 restrictions and allows you to redistribute your closed source products with the Mongoose Library embedded.
This license provides access to software maintenance for updates, upgrades and priority technical support.

Product and Product Family Concept

In order to understand commercial licensing, a concept of Product and Product Family must be understood. The best way to understand them is by example.

Imagine a company “ACME Corporation“ that manufactures coffee machines, vacuum cleaners and air conditioners: all company products.
All products
Product family
Coffee machines have two Product Families: "Barista" and "Ristretto". Each Product in a Product Family has a specific name and price tag. Products within a single Product Family target the same market segment: for example, Barista Product Family targets semi-professional coffee makers, whilst a Ristretto Product Family targets a budget market.

Commercial License Options

Option 1. One Product license

Covers a single SKU. This license covers only one product type commercially positioned and sold to the end customers (the end result of a manufacturing process, which is offered to the market under a specific name / Stock Keeping Unit, SKU).

One Product license

Option 2. Product Family license

This license covers a group of related products (which have similar functionalities, identical purposes and similar target markets) united under one product line which is commercially positioned and sold to the end customers (offered to the market under a specific name).

A Product Family should:

  • Exclusively consist of SKUs offered to the market under a specific, uniform name or brand. It should not encompass SKUs with different names.
  • Only have SKUs under its umbrella; it should not act as an umbrella for other umbrellas, each containing SKUs.

An additional Product Family license might be required in the following cases:

  • A new revision of a Product Family released under a new name.
  • A Product Family incorporates a significant functional modification.

Product Family License

Option 3. Company-wide license

This license covers all company’s products commercially positioned and sold to the end customers (offered to the market).

This is the most flexible license suitable for the companies with global budget and multiple products:

  • Unlimited number of products. All products need to belong to the same legal entity.
  • Unlimited production volume - no royalties.

Company-wide License

Option 4. Custom Field license

Custom license for your business. This model allows us to be flexible and value-driven towards your integration project. Simply let us know the details of your project, and we will provide the most effective license option for you.

License fee structure

The license consists of:

A. License fee
A one-time fee that covers all Mongoose Library functionality for the most current version of the library. This fee is bound to:

  1. The specific version of the Mongoose Web Server Library current on the day of purchase.
  2. A specific product, product family, or company (depending on the license type).

B. Software Maintenance and Support Yearly Subscription Fee
The recurring yearly subscription fee for software maintenance and support is not included in the one-time license price and is available for renewal at your discretion.
This yearly subscription service includes:

Non Compliance and License Incompatibilities

Integrating Cesanta's software in a commercial product without fully releasing your source code or purchasing a commercial license can have legal ramifications. You agree to the terms under GPLv2 as you integrate our source code.

Incompatibilities, through taking different components of different sources and ignoring any license restrictions, can result in the software pieces you choose not to be permitted to be used in a single product.

If you are unsure which type of license is right for you, contact us to discuss.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a commercial license?

Once your product is commercial you need to either open your source code completely to continue using Mongoose free of charge under GPLv2 license or alternatively purchase a commercial license. To enquire about licensing, just get in touch.

So what’s the price?

Our pricing is bespoke to your project. Not every project has the same scale, so we want to be sure you get the right license at the right level needed. Nothing more, nothing less. Click here to get in touch for pricing, tell us more about your project and we will then get the price ready for you.

Is your license royalty-free?

Yes, our license is royalty-free. However, we do understand that this model does not suit everyone. If your needs require a custom license, we would be happy to work on a solution with you.

How long does the licensing process take?

From Cesanta's side it takes a couple of days. But, your company may want to do legal reviews which in some cases can take months. We suggest buying your license 6 months in advance of your product launch.
